Regardless of age, playing a recreational sport can be a great way to stay active. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or enjoy a game of pickleball in the park with friends on the weekend, there is always a risk of injury when playing a sport. Depending on the types of activities, you may be more prone to certain injuries.
While sports injuries refer to types of injuries that most commonly occur during exercise, they’re not limited to only athletes. Anyone can suffer from a sports injury and there are several factors that can increase the risk of sustaining an injury. Some of the most common factors are incorrect techniques, overtraining, overuse, increasing intensity too quickly, and not wearing proper equipment.
Certain body areas are more susceptible, and a handful of common injuries account for most sports-related cases.
Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries. It happens when you roll or twist your ankle in an awkward way, causing the ligaments in the joint to stretch unnaturally or tear. It may happen when landing after jumping, pivoting, or walking on an uneven surface.
Runners Knee
This particular condition causes pain or tenderness close to or underneath the kneecap at the front of the knee. As per the name, it is commonly seen in runners, but it affects cyclists, hikers, basketball players, and anyone who has the potential to overuse the knee, causing inflammation and irritation.
Rotator Cuff
Repetitive overhead motion can easily inflame the muscles and tendons in the shoulder, causing rotator cuff injuries or impingement. Both of these injuries can limit movement and are commonly seen in swimmers, tennis players, painters, and people who repeatedly reach upwards.
Tennis Elbow
Commonly seen in people who play tennis and other racket sports, or when one uses their arm a lot in typing, lifting, and using tools. Tennis elbow is when the tendons in the elbow wear down and become inflamed. Some common signs of tennis elbow may be pain on the outside of the elbow, weak grip, or pain when twisting your arm.
