Dr. Joseph Schreiber Publishes Article in the Journal of Hand Surgery

October 25, 2016 | Joseph J. Schreiber, MD

Joseph J. Schreiber, MD of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic recently had an article accepted for publication in the July, 2016 issue of the Journal of Hand Surgery – the premiere journal for publishing new findings in the field of hand surgery. Dr. Schreiber and colleagues at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC recently published research findings correlating bone density measurements from wrist CT scans to bone density (DXA) results at the hip.  DXA scans of the hip are routinely used to screen for and diagnose osteoporosis, define fracture risk, and monitor response to treatment.  These new findings show that bone density at the wrist closely matches bone density at the hip.  This study explores the possibility of taking information from CT scans to screen for osteoporosis and alert physicians and patients about who may be at risk for a fragility fracture.  If osteoporosis is identified early and treated appropriately, fractures could potentially be prevented.
