What many fans don’t see is the dedicated team working behind the scenes throughout the season to help keep players healthy, evaluate injuries, coordinate treatment plans, and support athletes through one of the most physically demanding sports in professional athletics.
Recently, CBS17 highlighted Raleigh Orthopaedic’s longtime partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes and the role our physicians have played alongside the organization for more than two decades. The story offered a rare glimpse into the work that happens away from the spotlight but is critical to helping players perform at the highest level.
Hockey Is One of the Toughest Sports in the World
An NHL season is a grind. Players endure high-speed collisions, blocked shots, falls into the boards, and the physical wear and tear that comes with competing at the highest level. Add the intensity of playoff hockey, and the demands only increase.

Being a team doctor extends far beyond standing behind the bench during a game.

A Championship Years in the Making
For Raleigh Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Joseph Barker, the Stanley Cup victory was a rewarding moment after years of supporting the organization.
“It has been a privilege to be a doctor for the Carolina Hurricanes for the past 16 years,” said Dr. Barker. “It was an amazing experience to play a role in helping this team reach their goal of hoisting the Stanley Cup.”
The championship represented the culmination of countless hours of work from players, coaches, trainers, staff, and everyone involved in supporting the team throughout the season.
The moment was equally meaningful for Raleigh Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Physician Dr. William Isbell, who has worked with the Hurricanes players for the past 20 years.
“I am happy to be a part of the team, and it’s a great culmination to my 20 years of taking care of them,” said Dr. Isbell.
While the players earned their place in franchise history on the ice, the championship was also a proud moment for the medical professionals who have supported the organization season after season.
