At Raleigh Orthopaedic, our commitment to advancing patient care means continually evaluating and adopting innovative technologies that can improve outcomes and help patients stay active longer. That commitment is why we are proud to offer the MISHA® Knee System, a groundbreaking treatment option designed for patients who have exhausted conservative treatments but are not yet ready for knee replacement surgery.
Two of our Sports Medicine specialists, Dr. Evan James and Dr. David Dare, have already successfully performed surgeries using the MISHA Knee System, making Raleigh Orthopaedic one of only four providers in the Raleigh-Durham area and one of just six providers in North Carolina currently offering this advanced technology.
What Is the MISHA Knee System?
The MISHA Knee System, developed by Moximed, is an implantable shock absorber designed to reduce pressure on the inside (medial compartment) of the knee, where osteoarthritis most commonly develops.
Unlike a total knee replacement, the MISHA Knee System preserves the patient’s natural knee anatomy. The device is implanted alongside the knee joint, where it helps absorb and redistribute forces that would otherwise be placed on damaged cartilage and bone.
This innovative approach provides a new treatment option for patients experiencing persistent knee pain caused by osteoarthritis who are caught between conservative care and joint replacement surgery.
Filling a Critical Gap in Knee Care
For many patients with knee osteoarthritis, treatment options have historically fallen into two categories:
- Conservative treatments such as physical therapy, activity modification, medications, injections, and bracing.
- Total or partial knee replacement surgery.
The challenge is that many patients find themselves in a difficult middle ground. Conservative treatments may no longer provide adequate relief, but their arthritis has not progressed to the point where knee replacement is the best option.
The MISHA Knee System was developed specifically to address this gap in care.
By reducing the load placed on the affected area of the knee, the device can help relieve pain, improve function, and allow patients to maintain a more active lifestyle without removing bone or replacing the joint.
Benefits of the MISHA Knee System
One of the most exciting aspects of the MISHA Knee System is its ability to provide symptom relief while preserving future treatment options.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced knee pain during daily activities
- Improved mobility and function
- Preservation of the natural knee joint
- A less invasive alternative to knee replacement
- Continued ability to pursue future treatment options if needed
- Potential for a faster recovery compared to joint replacement surgery
Because the device works as a shock absorber, it helps decrease the repetitive forces that contribute to pain in the arthritic portion of the knee. This can allow patients to return to activities they enjoy with greater comfort and confidence.
What Patients Can Expect
The MISHA Knee System is not appropriate for every patient experiencing knee pain. Candidates are typically individuals with medial knee osteoarthritis who continue to have symptoms despite conservative treatment but are not yet ideal candidates for knee replacement.
The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation by one of our orthopedic specialists. Imaging studies, physical examination findings, activity level, and treatment history all help determine whether the MISHA Knee System may be an appropriate option.
Following surgery, patients work through a personalized rehabilitation plan designed to restore strength, mobility, and function. Recovery timelines vary based on individual circumstances, but many patients appreciate that the procedure allows them to preserve their natural knee while addressing pain and functional limitations.
Why This Matters for Patients in the Triangle
As one of only a handful of providers offering the MISHA Knee System in North Carolina, Raleigh Orthopaedic continues to lead the region in providing access to advanced orthopedic treatments.
Bringing innovative technologies to our patients means they don’t have to travel outside the region to explore the latest evidence-based treatment options. More importantly, it means our physicians can offer solutions that are tailored to each patient’s stage of disease rather than forcing them into a one-size-fits-all treatment pathway.
For patients who have felt caught between ongoing pain and the prospect of knee replacement surgery, the MISHA Knee System offers a promising new alternative.
Advancing Orthopedic Care Through Innovation
At Raleigh Orthopaedic, innovation is never about adopting new technology for its own sake. It is about finding better ways to help patients move comfortably, remain active, and achieve lasting results.
The addition of the MISHA Knee System reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering cutting-edge orthopedic care while focusing on what matters most: patient success, improved function, and better long-term outcomes.
As orthopedic technology continues to evolve, Raleigh Orthopaedic remains dedicated to evaluating and embracing advancements that can help our patients return to the activities they love with less pain and greater confidence.
