May 20, 2026 | Raleigh Orthopaedic Team

After 32 years of dedicated service, Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic announces the retirement of Dr. David W. Boone, a highly respected orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon whose career has shaped the lives of countless patients across the Triangle. His retirement marks the end of an extraordinary chapter defined by clinical excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to patient care.

Dr. Boone joined Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in 1994 after completing his fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. From the beginning of his tenure, he became known for his thoughtful approach to complex orthopedic conditions and his ability to combine surgical precision with conservative treatment options whenever possible. Over the course of his career, he helped patients of all ages return to the activities that mattered most to them, whether recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions, or navigating complex reconstructive needs of the foot and ankle.

His clinical focus centered on foot and ankle injuries, fractures, reconstructive procedures, and sports-related conditions of the lower extremity. He developed a reputation for taking the time to fully understand each patient’s situation, carefully weighing non-operative and surgical options to ensure the most appropriate treatment plan. That patient-first mindset became a hallmark of his practice and earned him the trust of both patients and colleagues for more than three decades.

Beyond his work in the clinic and operating room, Dr. Boone played a significant role in sports medicine throughout the region. He served as team physician for North Carolina State University athletics and provided long-standing coverage for local high school sports programs, including Sanderson High School, where he began serving as volunteer head team physician in 1994. His presence on the sidelines became a familiar and reassuring part of the athletic community, supporting student-athletes through injury care, recovery, and safe return to play.

Dr. Boone also contributed extensively to leadership within the medical community. He held leadership roles at WakeMed and UNC Rex Hospital, including serving as chairman of orthopedic departments. He went on to serve as President of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association and later as President of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, helping guide both clinical standards and organizational growth during important periods of expansion.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Boone has been recognized not only for his surgical expertise but also for his mentorship, professionalism, and steady leadership. Colleagues describe him as a trusted physician who consistently prioritized doing what was best for his patients, while also supporting the growth and development of those around him.

As he retires after 32 years with Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, Dr. Boone leaves behind a legacy defined by excellence in foot and ankle care, service to the athletic community, and decades of leadership in orthopedic medicine. His contributions have helped shape the foundation of the practice and the standard of care provided throughout the region.

Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Boone for his remarkable career and lasting impact. While he will be greatly missed by patients, colleagues, and the broader community, his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come.
