Raking Leaves in Fall

Yardwork is part of fall for many North Carolina homeowners, especially raking leaves and cleaning up branches. While it may not seem physically demanding, these tasks can put stress on your back, shoulders, and joints. Understanding common injuries, how to prevent them, and when to seek care can help you stay healthy through the season.

Common Yardwork Injuries

Back Strains and Sprains

The lower back takes on a lot of stress when bending, twisting, or lifting heavy bags of leaves. Overuse of the muscles or improper lifting techniques can lead to muscle strains, while sudden awkward movements may cause ligament sprains. Symptoms include stiffness, soreness, or sharp pain that worsens with movement.

Shoulder Irritation and Rotator Cuff Strains

Raking involves repeated overhead or sweeping motions, which can inflame the tendons of the shoulder (rotator cuff tendinitis) or cause muscle fatigue. Over time, this may lead to pain when lifting the arm, weakness, or difficulty sleeping on the affected side.

Elbow and Forearm Pain

The repetitive gripping and pulling of a rake can irritate the tendons around the elbow. This often leads to conditions similar to “tennis elbow,” where pain radiates from the outside of the elbow down the forearm.

Knee and Hip Discomfort

Frequent bending, kneeling, or squatting while bagging leaves or pulling weeds can strain the knees and hips. For those with arthritis, this repetitive stress may worsen stiffness or swelling.

Hand and Wrist Strain

Gripping tools tightly for long periods or using tools that don’t fit your hand size can lead to tendonitis or flare-ups of carpal tunnel syndrome. This may cause pain, tingling, or numbness in the hand and fingers.

How to Prevent Yardwork Injuries

Warm Up and Pace Yourself

Treat yardwork like exercise. Take 5–10 minutes to warm up with light stretches for your back, shoulders, and legs. Break big jobs into smaller chunks, taking short breaks every 20–30 minutes to avoid overuse.

Use Proper Technique

  • When raking, keep your back straight and use your legs and arms together instead of twisting your spine.
  • Alternate raking sides every few minutes to balance muscle use.
  • When lifting heavy bags, squat and use your legs to push up, rather than bending at the waist.

Choose Ergonomic Tools

  • Use rakes with padded handles and long shafts so you don’t have to hunch over.
  • Lightweight tools reduce fatigue.
  • Gloves with cushioning can protect your hands and improve your grip.

Protect Your Joints

  • Wear supportive, closed-toe shoes with good traction to prevent slips on wet leaves.
  • Use knee pads or a small gardening stool if you’ll be kneeling for long periods.
  • Avoid working for hours at a time; spread the work out over several days if possible.

Stay Hydrated and Aware of Surroundings

Even in cooler fall weather, your body still loses fluids during physical activity, so it’s important to drink water regularly. Wet or damp leaves can be slippery and hide uneven ground, increasing the risk of slips and falls. Wear supportive shoes, watch your footing, and take your time when walking on covered areas.

What to Do If You Get Injured

  • Muscle soreness or mild strain: Rest, apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, and use over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
  • Swelling or more painful strains: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) can help in the first 48 hours.
  • Minor cuts or blisters: Clean with soap and water, apply an antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandage.

When to Seek Care

  • Urgent Care: If you have sudden sharp pain, swelling, or difficulty moving a joint after raking or lifting, Raleigh Orthopaedic Urgent Care provides same-day access to specialists seven days a week at our Raleigh and Wakefield locations.
  • Orthopedist visit: If pain lasts more than a few days, worsens with activity, or limits your ability to do everyday tasks, it’s time to schedule an appointment with an orthopedist.
  • Emergency Room: For deep cuts with heavy bleeding, suspected fractures, or sudden loss of strength or sensation in an arm or leg, head to the ER immediately.
