Meet Dr. Jernigan – Hand & Upper Extremity Surgeon in NC

Dr. Jernigan is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. His clinical interests include hand, forearm, and elbow fractures and soft tissue trauma including tendon and neurovascular injuries, inflammatory and osteoarthritis, compression neuropathies, wrist disorders, elbow instability, elbow arthroplasty, and management of post-amputation neuromas.

Dr. Jernigan began his academic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest distinction and received the Department of Chemistry Merck Index Award. He continued at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to receive his medical degree, and during this time he was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Jernigan also completed his surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  After residency, Dr. Jernigan completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, ranked by US News and World Report as the #1 orthopedic hospital.

Dr. Jernigan has authored over 20 peer-reviewed research abstracts, articles, and book chapters on hand, wrist, and elbow pathology in some of the top journals in orthopedic surgery, including the Journal of Hand Surgery and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. He has presented numerous scientific studies at various national orthopedic conferences. In medical school, he was selected into the Howard Holderness Distinguished Medical Scholars Program, a two-year program that included a dedicated basic science research year in an NIH-funded lab. He served as a coordinating council member of the Student Health Action Coalition, a student-led organization at UNC providing interdisciplinary service opportunities including medical care at a local, free health clinic. During residency, Dr. Jernigan was awarded the Resident Research Presentation Award by the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association Hand Breakout Session. He has participated in multiple medical mission trips.
