Raleigh Orthopaedic is excited to be the medical providers for The Atlantic Tire Championships held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, NC. Raleigh Orthopaedic sports medicine physician, Dr. Joseph Barker, has served as the tournament physician since 2015.
The Atlantic Tire Championships ran from November 7, 2020 through November 15, 2020 as part of the United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit ATP Challenger Event series, featuring the next rising stars in tennis. Pro Circuit alumni have accounted for more than fifty Grand Slam Singles titles, and seventeen Pro Circuit veterans have risen to rank number one in the world.
As tournament physician, Dr. Barker worked closely with the Certified Athletic Trainer/Sports Medicine Therapist working at the tournament to evaluate and treat players as needed.
Due to safety concerns relating to COVID-19 the tournament was a closed event this year without spectators.
In addition to medical coverage, Raleigh Orthopaedic provided certified athletic trainers for COVID-19 screening throughout the entire week of the tournament. For the last eight years, Raleigh Orthopaedic has partnered with Cary Tennis Park for medical coverage and performance training and has athletic trainers present at many of the tennis tournaments held at Cary Tennis Park.
About Joseph U. Barker, MD
Dr. Barker is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon in Sports Medicine. His areas of expertise include sports medicine, shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy, and cartilage restoration. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in August 2010, he received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, where he was awarded a Howard Hughes Fellowship for his orthopaedic research. He completed his internship and residency at Cornell University/Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and then was selected for a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
