What Is Bursitis?
Bursitis is an uncomfortable condition that affects the small, jelly-like sacs (bursae) that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles around your joints. Bursae sacs contain a small amount of fluid and are located between bones, acting as cushions to help reduce friction.
Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa most commonly caused by joints that perform frequent and repetitive motion, particularly affecting the hip joint.
What Causes Hip Bursitis?
Hip bursitis can be caused by:
- Repetitive motions (running up and down hills or stairs)
- Muscle weakness
- Incorrect posture
- Direct trauma (being hit or falling on the side of the hip)
- Differences in the length of each leg
- Hip surgery or replacement
- Bone spurs in the hip
- Infection
- Diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriasis, or thyroid disease
- Muscles or tendons in the hip area rubbing the bursa and causing irritation
What Are The Symptoms Of Hip Bursitis?
The main symptom of bursitis is pain. If you suffer from this condition you will most likely feel pain in your hip and may experience the following conditions:
- Pain on the outer side of the hip, thigh, buttock, or outside of the leg
- Pain when you push on the outer side of the hip with your fingers
- Pain when lying on the affected hip
- Pain when climbing stairs
- Pain that worsens when getting up from sitting, such as from a low chair or car seat
- Pain when walking or running
- Pain when lifting the leg up to the side
- Pain when sitting with legs crossed
Treatment Of Hip Bursitis
The American Hip Institute recently suggested that while patients with lateral hip pain diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis are successfully treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, and physical therapy in many cases, a substantial number of patients continue to have pain and functional limitations.
How Can PRP Therapy Help When You Suffer From Hip Bursitis?
Chronic hip bursitis is a common yet difficult condition to treat successfully.  A study, “Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) More Effective than Cortisone for Severe Chronic Hip Bursitis,” was presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The study compared the results of PRP and cortisone injections in patients with severe chronic hip (greater trochanteric) bursitis, and the results show that PRP injections are significantly more effective and durable than cortisone injections for the treatment of severe chronic hip bursitis.
Another study showed that in PRP treatment for bursitis, “improvement was observed during the first 3 months after injection. Significant improvement was also noted when patients were followed up until 12 months post treatment.” We can safely assume that PRP injections have beneficial and long-lasting effects in the treatment of bursitis.
