Orthopedic doctors are specialized physicians who can treat your musculoskeletal issue using surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Orthopedic doctors are highly experienced in diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions, injuries, and diseases associated with the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue in the body.
Finding the right orthopedic doctor to help you ease pain symptoms or improve functionality is important, and we understand that looking for a trusted orthopedic doctor can seem like a daunting task. To help you find the best and most qualified orthopedists in your area, we are sharing a 3 step guide:
Step 1: Find a Qualified Provider in Your Area
Search your area for a well-regarded doctor with whom you can communicate freely and honestly. To begin your search:
- Talk to your primary care doctor, who should be able to refer you to an orthopedic specialist in your area.
- Since first-hand experience generally helps, speak with your friends and family, some of whom may have seen an orthopedist or know someone who has.
- Peruse the websites of professional organizations. Both the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons have online member directories that you can search by specialty and city, state, or zip code.
Look for clinic and physician reviews. Places like Google Business Listings and WebMD should have a number of patient reviews for you to evaluate.
Consider your comfort level with physicians and staff. At Raleigh Orthopaedic, there is a video on each of our physician’s personal webpage so you can get to know them better.
Step 2: Check Credentials and Background
Spend some time reviewing the orthopedist’s education and training. Some orthopedic doctors treat general orthopedic concerns, while others specialize in a particular area. If a doctor is fellowship-trained, they have spent an extended amount of time training, and are considered experts in their field of study. So if you are presenting with say knee pain, you could consider seeing an orthopedist who specializes in treatment of the knee. At Raleigh Orthopaedic, all 22 of our orthopedic doctors are fellowship-trained and specialize in a particular field of study.
Step 3: Check Availability and Cost:
Some clinics have very long wait lists to get an appointment. It is up to you to determine how quickly you should be seen. Luckily, at Raleigh Orthopedic, we can generally get patients in to be seen within 48-72 hours of scheduling. In some cases we may even be able to squeeze them in same-day. We also offer orthopedic Urgent Care at all 6 of our clinic locations for more immediate concerns.
In addition, be sure to find out beforehand whether your insurance is accepted and will cover the cost of your visit. You can do this by either calling your insurance company directly or doing a provider search on the member portal of your insurance company’s website.
