What is the Bike Challenge?
The Bike Challenge is a fundraising event hosted by Raleigh Orthopaedic and benefiting the Carolina Hurricanes’ Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Teams (recommendation of 12+ participants) work together and ride a bike over a 24-hour period. This year’s event will take place from Friday, August 19 at 6pm until Saturday, August 19 at 6pm. In addition, each rider is required to raise a minimum donation of $50 to participate. To view a video from a past event, click here.
This year we are adding a Corporate Division to the Bike Challenge. This will be a 12-hour race taking place Saturday, August 19th from 6AM to 6PM. Each corporate team is required to make a minimum donation of $1200 dollars, which can be raised by employees, donated by the company, or a mix of both. If a corporation sponsors the event , there are team discounts available. Click Here to see our Sponsorship Opportunities
What/who does the Bike Challenge benefit?
The Bike Challenge benefits the Carolina Hurricanes’ charitable arm the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. As “The Heart of the Carolina Hurricanes,” the Kids ‘N Community Foundation strives to meet the health and educational needs of underserved populations in our community through programming and financial assistance to local, youth-oriented organizations.
During the 2015-16 year of funding, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $575,000 in cash grants to 27 different children’s non-profits. This grant cycle brings the Foundation and team’s donation totals to more than $13 million in cash and in-kind services since 1997.

Where does the Bike Challenge take place?
The Bike Challenge takes place indoors at EXOS @ Raleigh Orthopaedic located at 2400 Sumner Blvd., #120, Raleigh, NC 27616.
Do I have to ride a bike for 24 hours?
No! Team members will take turns riding the bike throughout the 24 hours. Every team is different, but some teams will create a schedule where specific team members come for a certain shift and rotate within that shift. Some teams will choose to have each participant ride the bike for 3 minutes at a time or some teams will have each member ride for 30 minutes.
For example, a team will assign five to six participants to a 3-5 hour shift. During this time, the team members will rotate riding the bike for 15 minutes each. This results in each team member riding a total of about one hour during their shift.
Example: People 1-5 are responsible for riding from 6pm-9pm on Friday. SignUpGenius.com is a great place to organize the schedule and its free!

Are we able to stay overnight if we plan on being there for 24 hours?
Yes! There is an area reserved so people can spend the night. You are welcome to bring a sleeping bag, air mattress, etc. if you plan on staying overnight.
How many people do I need for a team?
As many people as possible. There is no limit on how many riders you can have! The more people you have at each shift over the 12/24 hour period will lessen the amount of time each person has to spend on the bike.
Is there a participation fee?
No, there is no participation fee. However, each rider in the competitive and recreational divisions is required to raise a minimum donation of $50 to participate during the event. Invite your family, friends, coworkers, etc. to make a donation on your behalf using this form. All it takes is five people to each make a $10 donation for you to raise your minimum $50 donation.
There is no participation fee for a corporate division team. The minimum donation for a corporate team (as a whole) is $1200. This can be raised by employees, donated by the company, or a mix of both.
In addition, we encourage each rider to fundraise beyond the $50 to benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. There are great prizes available for the top fundraising team and top fundraising individuals. For a complete list of prizes, visit https://www.raleighortho.com/7th-annual-24-hour-bike-challenge/
What do I receive for participating?
Each rider will receive a t-shirt, food and drink throughout the event, and the opportunity to win raffle prizes. There will be food served for dinner, late night, breakfast and lunch.
What is the difference between the competitive, recreational and corporate division?
All three divisions will compete on stationary PreCor 846i bikes. However, teams will only compete with teams in the same division (competitive competes with competitive, recreational competes with recreational, etc.)
The competitive division is for advanced teams to compete throughout the 24 hours while the recreational division is for teams hoping to enjoy the event, help the cause and enjoy the 24 hours. The corporate division is a 12-hour race for companies to promote team building and wellness.
