Concussion awareness has significantly increased over the last several years. This increased awareness has been vital to treating concussions appropriately after recognition. Part of the management and ultimate treatment for concussions is aided by neuropsychological (computer memory) testing for athletes age 10 and up.
One of the newer types of testing used in evaluating concussions, is neuropsychological testing. It is one of several tools that our concussion experts at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic use to evaluate an athlete with a concussion. This type of testing is designed to give an objective measurement of brain function. Neuropsychological testing does not, by itself, determine if an athlete has experienced a concussion or when they may safely return to play. The information obtained from doing a baseline test before injury can be one more tool used by the physician in management.
Ideally, a baseline (pre-injury test) of the athlete would be obtained to serve as a comparison for testing done in the office after injury. However, if this is not possible, the data collected during the initial visit to the concussion clinic will be compared to standardized scores (normative data).
Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic (ROC) is happy to offer ImPACT testing at our concussion clinic. ImPACT is a widely used and studied form of neuropsychological test. ImPACT testing is used by the NFL, NBA, Major League Soccer, NHL, many Colleges and Universities, among others.
