Sustaining Injury: When To Visit An Orthopedic Urgent Care

May 17, 2022 | By: Raleigh Orthopaedic Team

The Carolina Hurricanes advanced to the second round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs after winning game 7 against the Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes will face the New York Rangers in the second round of the playoffs, which kicks off tomorrow night.

The first round of playoffs left the Canes without their starting goalie, Frederik Andersen, due to a lower body injury after extending his left leg to make a save in a game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Andersen’s injury sparks the question, what should one do after sustaining an injury?

While professional hockey is a brutal sport, pro athletes are not the only people in need of orthopedic urgent care. Orthopedic urgent care centers are intended for patients who have suffered very recent injuries, sprains, or broken bones (fractures). An urgent care facility offers immediate access to orthopedic care so you can receive specialized, quality treatment without the lengthy wait time and cost of the emergency room.

At Raleigh Orthopaedic Urgent Cares, we provide treatments for a wide variety of acute injuries.  Our highly skilled Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners are trained to handle serious, but not life-threatening, problems.  In addition, our fellowship-trained specialists are always available for consultation to ensure patients receive the best quality orthopedic care.

Common issues treated at an orthopedic urgent care:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor dislocations
  • Sports-related injury
  • Swollen joints
  • Possible broken bones/fractures
  • Recent Injuries to:
    • Foot and ankle
    • Elbow or shoulder
    • Hip
    • Hand Wrist
    • Back and neck
  • Minor cuts
  • Injuries from a fall
  • Work injuries, such as blunt trauma
  • Cast or wound dressing problems
  • Other urgent orthopedic conditions

What do you mean by recent injury?

Back pain, for example, is a very common adult problem. Nearly 80 percent of adults experience back pain during their lifetime. Chronic (long-term) back pain is common. However, recent back pain is usually a result of lifting or carrying something and has developed rapidly over a few days. These are the types of injuries that can be assessed at our urgent care clinics. These injuries are usually a minor muscle strain, but can be very uncomfortable.. If someone has been experiencing back pain for months or years, it is best they make an appointment with one of our Raleigh Orthopaedic back specialists.
