Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic has maintained a strong relationship with Garner Magnet High School as official team physician for nearly 15 year, when Dr. Lyman Smith has served as volunteer Head Team Physician. He will continue to assist Head Athletic Trainer, Mike Guerrero, with orthopaedic injuries at Garner Magnet High School during the upcoming school year. Dr. Smith is also a team physician for N.C. State University.
Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic also serves as the official team physician for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, North Carolina State University and five local high schools, including: Broughton High School, Garner Magnet High School, Sanderson High School, Southeast Raleigh High School and South Garner High School. The physicians at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic are experts in the field of sports medicine, and have the knowledge and experience to treat athletes of all ages and skill.
About Dr. Smith:
Dr. Smith is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in shoulder surgery, sports medicine, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, knee arthroscopy and total knee replacement. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in 1991, he received his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine; he completed his internship and residency at the University of Virginia, and completed a sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute.
Dr. Smith’s interest in sports medicine started while playing four years of varsity football at Duke University. For two years, between college and medical school, he played professional football with the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. He currently serves as a team physician for NC State University football team and the Garner High School football team. In addition, he is the team physician for the Carolina Ballet.
