Mark R. Mikles, MD of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic has been appointed President of the Department of Orthopaedic at UNC Rex Hospital, effective January 1, 2017. In his new position Dr. Mikles will oversee the daily activities of the department while being part of the UNC Rex Hospital medical executive committee, the surgical services executive committee, and will continue to serve on the medical staff peer review committee and the orthopaedic service line committee.
Dr Mikles graduated Summa Cum Laude from Virginia Tech where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Dr. Mikles attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Following residency, Dr. Mikles obtained additional training in spine surgery doing a combined fellowship at the New York University and Hospital for Joint Diseases where he was trained in adult spinal deformity and scoliosis surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery, and artificial disc replacement surgery.
Dr. Mikles has authored and co-authored scientific articles and book chapters on various spine related topics, and is an active member in many professional societies, including American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, North Carolina Medical Society, North Carolina Orthopaedic Association, North Carolina Spine Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
