Lyman S.W. Smith, MD of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic was recognized by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) to receive a 2016 service award. The award was presented by Mike Guerrero, Athletic Trainer for Garner Magnet High School, at the Trojans football game on Friday, November 4, 2016.
Dr. Smith is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in shoulder surgery, sports medicine, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, knee arthroscopy and total knee replacement. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in 1991, he received his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine; he completed his internship and residency at the University of Virginia, and completed a sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute.
Dr. Smith’s interest in sports medicine started while playing four years of varsity football at Duke University. For two years, between college and medical school, he played professional football with the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. He currently serves as a team physician for NC State University football team and the Garner High School football team. In addition, he is the team physician for the Carolina Ballet.
