Joseph U. Barker, MD Selected to Serve on the Editorial Board for “Journal of Knee Surgery”

For the seventh consecutive year, Joseph U. Barker, M.D. of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic has been selected serve on the editorial board for the “Journal of Knee Surgery.”  The “Journal of Knee Surgery” reports on issues relating to the orthopedic techniques of arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and reconstructive surgery of the knee joint. In addition to peer-review articles, this periodical details emerging surgical techniques and includes case studies, reviews, and special focus sections on for instance, trauma and sports medicine.

“It is exciting to remain involved with this excellent journal. I am passionate about the latest advances in ACL surgery, cartilage restoration, and the use of new cell therapies. Reviewing the latest articles prior to publication allows me to constantly be up-to-date in my knowledge base in this area. I have personally had 6 knee surgeries, so the Journal of Knee Surgery is important to me from both a personal and professional standpoint.”

Dr. Barker is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon in Sports Medicine and is a team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes, NC State University men’s basketball team, and Broughton High School.  His areas of expertise include sports medicine, shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy, and cartilage restoration. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in August 2010, Dr. Barker grew up in Asheville, NC. He attended Wake Forest University for his undergraduate degree, where he received a full-tuition academic scholarship and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He attended Duke University School of Medicine on a full-tuition academic scholarship and was awarded a Howard Hughes Fellowship for his orthopaedic research. He completed his surgical internship and his orthopaedic residency at Cornell University/Hospital for Special Surgery in New York ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the #1 orthopaedic hospital in the nation. He then was selected for a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he was an assistant team physician for DePaul University, Chicago Steel Hockey, the Chicago White Sox, and the Chicago Bulls.

Dr. Barker has authored over 20 book chapters and scientific articles on hip, knee, and shoulder injuries. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Knee Surgery and is a member of the International Cartilage Repair Society. His clinical and research interests include: ACL injuries, rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, meniscus surgery, hip arthroscopy, and cartilage repair.
