Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic and WakeMed Team Up for the Fourth Annual Spine Camp
Raleigh, N.C. (September 6, 2011) – On Saturday, October 29, 2011, Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic and WakeMed Health & Hospitals are co-hosting the fourth annual Spine Camp in the Health Park on WakeMed Raleigh Campus.
Children, teens and their families are invited to participate in the one-day free camp to learn about the mechanical function of the back and how the back works, nutrition tips and information related to the growing spine, exercises to help manage spinal conditions, the latest treatment options, and the emotional aspects of spinal disorders.
With medical statistics showing that one in 50 children develop scoliosis, Keith Mankin, M.D., a pediatric orthopedist at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, worked with WakeMed therapists to develop the Spine Camp. The event brings young people, their families and their friends together to learn more about the physical and emotional aspects of spinal conditions. “The purpose of Spine Camp is to encourage young people and their families to take a proactive approach to learning and understanding spinal conditions,” explained Dr. Mankin. “We will give kids the opportunity to take advantage of a free spinal screening as well as talk to other kids and medical professionals about spinal conditions.”
“The goal is to help develop a strong community network for spinal conditions and to provide children, families and friends a chance to come together yearly to support and learn from each other,” noted Dr. Mankin.
This year we expect 200 children, family members and friends of children who are in braces, who have undergone surgery or who are awaiting surgery. More information is available at www.raleighortho.com or www.wakemed.org
