Dr. Joseph Barker to Speak at the North Carolina Medical Society's Annual Sports Medicine Symposium
Raleigh, NC (July 21, 2011) – Joseph U. Barker, M.D. of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic will speak at the North Carolina Medical Society’s Annual Sports Medicine Symposium. The conference, to be held at the Holiday Inn Resort inWrightsvilleBeach from July 22-24, 2011, is intended to provide continued education for individuals in the field of Sports Medicine including Physicians, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, and Athletic Trainers. This year’s symposium features timely presentations on the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sports-related issues including concussions, sudden cardiac arrest, lower extremity injuries, the female athlete, and hip pain with an emphasis on newer diagnostic techniques and new treatment options. Dr. Barker was selected to address Ligament Injuries of the Knee.
“The purpose of this talk is to review common ligament injuries of the knee, with an emphasis on recent advancements in treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears,” says Dr. Barker.
Dr. Barker is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon in Sports Medicine. His areas of expertise include sports medicine, shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy, and cartilage restoration. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in August 2010, he received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, where he was awarded a Howard Hughes Fellowship for his orthopaedic research. He completed his internship and residency at Cornell University/Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and then was selected for a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Barker has had numerous articles and book chapters on ACL injuries published or presented. He continues to perform clinical and basic science research on ACL injuries and remains committed to advancing science in this field. Additionally, Dr. Barker is on the editorial board for the Journal of Knee Surgery. Having experienced multiple ACL injuries himself, he remains passionate about these injuries and their treatment.
