Keith P. Mankin, MD, FAAP
Dr. Mankin is a board-certified, fellowship trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. He attended Harvard University for his undergraduate degree, and Medical School at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to joining Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in 2001, Dr. Mankin completed a pediatric orthopaedic fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Mankin has experience and expertise in every aspect of pediatric care, from foot and hip deformities to fractures and sports injuries, from spinal curvature (scoliosis) to neuromuscular disease. Dr. Mankin has a particular focused interest in spinal condition. Two of his clinics are devoted to back problems and he has worked closely with WakeMed to institute a spinal rehab program for his operative and non-operative patients. He also co-hosts an annual Spine Camp with WakeMed rehab in order to help children with scoliosis cope with the stress of the condition and to educate the children and their parents alike.
In his surgical practice, Dr. Mankin has always been on the cutting edge. He was the first orthopaedist in North Carolina to be trained to perform rib expansion (VEPTR) surgery for very young children with severe spine deformities. He is skilled at arthroscopic reconstruction of knee disorders and injuries including ACL tears and kneecap malalignment. And he has developed a unique blood conservation program to limit blood loss during his surgeries. As a result, most of his spinal fusions do not require transfusion or other blood products, as he has decreased blood loss by more than 70% from historically reported levels.
In addition, Dr. Mankin is noted for his community involvement, he is the team physician for North Carolina University's Women's Sports as well as Southeast Raleigh High School. He has also been selected to serve on the board for the North Carolina Safe Surgery Collaborative Expert/Advisory Committee.
