Sprains or Strains

What is Sprain?

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments


What is a Strain?

A strain is the stretch or tearing of muscle or tendon. Strains are commonly referred to as ‘pulled’ muscles


Causes of a Sprain:

• Trauma


Causes of a Strain:

• Overuse

• Inadequate rest breaks

• Overstretching


Signs and Symptoms of a Sprain:

• Pain

• Swelling

• Inflammation

• Usually you will hear a tear or pop


Signs and Symptoms of a Strain:

• Pain

• Muscle spasm and weakness

• Swelling

• Stiffness

• Bruising

• Inflammation


Nonsurgical Treatment:

• Rest

• Ice

• Compression

• Elevation


Surgical Treatment:

A severe strain or sprain may require surgery
