What does it take to be a Orthopaedic Surgeon?
To become an orthopaedic surgeon, you must:

Complete four years of study in a college or university

Complete 1 year internship in general surgery

Complete 4 year residency in orthopaedic surgery

Complete 1 year fellowship in sub-specialty training (optional)
The NC Medical Board requires all physicians to have 150 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) over a 3 year period.
What is an internship and residency?
The first year of the residency training is called an internship beginning on July 1st. Residency training is four years of studying the fundamentals of orthopaedic surgery, rotating through the major subspecialties.
What is a fellowship?
A fellowship is a one year sub-specialty training for orthopaedic surgoens following residency to focus on one speciality
What does it mean to be board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS)?
To be certified by the ABOS means that the orthopaedic surgeon has met the specific education, evaluation and examination requirements of the board to assure the public that he or she has been adequately trained in the given specialty.
How does an Orthopaedic Surgeon become board certified?
To become board certified in orthopaedic surgery it requires the candidate to complete their accredited residency, a written examination (Part I), a period of 22 months in practice (12 months at a single location), peer review and an oral examination based on the candidates own practice (Part II). All Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic surgeons are board certified or board eligible, and several of the surgeons have served as examiners for Part II of the board certification.
What does it mean to be board eligible?
A surgeon who passed Part I of the board certification and is practicing while awaiting admission to Part II is deemed "board eligible".
How often does a surgeon need to be recertified?
To maintain board certification, the orthopaedic surgeon must undergo a peer review and must pass a written or oral examination every 7 to 10 years.
