Mayor Meeker Recognizes Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic's 90th Anniversary

Mayor Meeker proclaimed March 17, 2009 as Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic Day in Raleigh and encouraged every citizen to acknowledge the clinic’s 90th birthday and exceptional leadership in the field of orthopaedics.

Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic (ROC) was founded by Dr. Hugh A. Thompson in 1919 before orthopaedic surgery was recognized as a specialty, making ROC one of the first orthopaedic practices in the country. Over the last 90 years ROC has grown to become a leader in the field of orthopaedics, with the doctors serving as president of the following organizations: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), North Carolina Medical Society, Wake County Medical Society, and the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association.

Today, Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic has nearly 100,000 square feet of space, with four clinic and rehabilitation locations in the Triangle area, and an Athletic Performance Center, dedicated to optimizing the sports performance of healthy and injured athletes of all ages. ROC has over 250 employees, including: 16 board certified orthopaedic surgeons, two physiatrists and one podiatrist, 12 physician assistants and 3 nurse practitioners.

Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic is celebrating its 90th anniversary serving the needs of area citizens, sports teams and other organizations. In order to reach out to the community, ROC participates in Project Access, a physician-led community effort to provide health care for low-income and uninsured Wake County residents. ROC has participated in Project Access since its inception in 2000, and in 2007, ROC donated $337,840 in medical care. The physicians and surgeons Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic serve as team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes, North Carolina State University’s basketball and baseball teams, the Carolina Ballet and Broughton, Garner, Millbrook, Southeast Raleigh, Sanderson, Knightdale and St. David’s high schools.
