Tarsal Tunnel

What is tarsal tunnel syndrome?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the nerves in the foot causing pain.

Causes:

• Most common in active adults

• Flat feet

• Ankle sprain may produce inflammation near the tunnel

• Obesity

• Rheumatoid Arthritis

• Diabetes

Signs and Symptoms:

• Pain and tingling in and around ankles and sometimes extending to the toes

• Swelling of the feet

• Painful burning, tingling, or numb sensations in the lower legs. Pain worsens and spreads after standing for long periods; pain is worse with activity and is relieved by rest

• Burning sensation on the bottom of foot that radiating upward

Treatment:

• Rest

• Anti-Inflammatory Medication

• Physical Therapy

• Use of orthotic devices

When to visit an orthopedist?

If pain persist after the following the treatment steps or if the signs and symtpoms get worse, then you should visit an orthopedist.
