Tendonitis

What is tendonitis?

Tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon caused by repetitive, minor impact on the affected area. The most common form of tendonitis in the foot and ankle is Achilles tendonitis, which is pain and swelling in the back of the heel.

Signs and Symptoms:

• Pain and minor swelling of the site of the tendon and surrounding area

• Pain after periods of inactivity (first walking in the morning or getting up after long period of sitting)

• Pain during activities (running or jumping)

• Restricted movement with or without pain

• Stiffness

• Tenderness

Causes:

• Repetitive strain or too much strain on the tendon

• Lack of flexibility

• Overpronation

• Recent changes in footwear

• Changes in exercise training schedules (increase in mileage or hill training)

Treatment:

• Rest

• Ice

• Anti-Inflammatory Medications

• Physical Therapy

• Stretching the tendon prior to exercise and at the start of the day

• Use Orthotic devices

• Ease back into activity

When to visit an orthopedist?

If pain persists after following the treatment steps for a least 1 week, then you should visit an orthopedist.
