Bunions

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a structural deformity of the bones and the joint between the foot and the big toe. A bunion is a bony bump on the joint at the base of the big toe. Bunions are a progressive disorder, which begins with leaning of the big toe, and as the bump gets larger it causes the big toe to turn in toward the second toe. A bony bump at the base of the small toe is called a bunionette or tailor’s bunion, the little toe also bend inward, and the joint swells.

What causes a bunion?

Bunions are most often caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure, which causes a persons foot structure to be more prone to develop a bunion. Avoid wearing high heels that force your toes into the front of your shoes, also avoid shoes that are too tight, too narrow

Signs and Symptoms:

Symptoms occur most often when wearing shoes that crowd the toes (not all bunions cause symptoms)

• Pain in your big toe

• Red or irritated skin around the bunion

• Burning sensation

• Swelling at the base of the big toe

• The big toe may point inward toward the other toes

• With a bunionette similar signs and symptoms can occur at the base of the little toe

Treatment:

• Rest the foot, avoid excessive walking

• Ice

• Take Anti-inflammatory Medications to reduce pain

• Change shoes to avoid wearing shoes that are too tight, too narrow or too pointed

• Use orthotics to add support

When to visit an orthopedist?
