Hand Therapy Splint of the Month - May 2008

PURPOSE:    Protection of healing nail bed from which natural nail has been avulsed. Gentle pressure to maintain flat, even surface of nail bed for new growth.

DIAGNOSIS:   Any fingertip injury resulting in avulsion of fingernail.

ADVANTAGES:   Removable splint for cleaning and observation of nail bed. Ability to monitor condition of nail bed and growth of new nail. Protection of hypersensitive fingertip area.

PRECAUTION:   This is not a disposable splint. It is reusable and the patient is instructed in care of splint at time of fitting.
